Broadway Lafayette bring the raw spirit of Zydeco straight from the subway to the stage. Formed in New York City, the band set out to capture the music’s original fire while pushing it into bold new territory. On Subway Zydeco, Mick Collins (The Gories, The Dirtbombs) reconnects with his Louisiana roots, channeling the black-Creole blues and the Zydeco tradition that stretches back to the 18th century.
To bring this vision to life, Collins teamed up with Matt Verta-Ray (Speedball Baby, Heavy Trash) and Rocio Verta-Ray, along with Mama Rosin — the legendary Cajun combat outfit from Geneva, Switzerland, known for their wild energy and versatility. Together, this lineup recorded on the fly, never playing a song the same way twice. That spontaneous spirit fuels the relentless drive of Subway Zydeco.
Born from the fusion of Creole melodies, Cajun influences, and African-American traditions like R&B, blues, jazz, and gospel, Zydeco has always thrived on cultural crosscurrents. Broadway Lafayette honor those roots with melodeon, accordion, and French lyrics, but charge it with a gritty New York edge and unchained intensity. The result is a sound that’s as timeless as it is untamed.
