Swamp Blues Meets No-Wave Grit

J.D. Hangover is the visceral collision of swampy, primal blues and the discordant grit of the New York no-wave underground. Born out of the creative aftershocks that followed the critically acclaimed Banks Of The Lea by Stiv Cantarelli & The Silent Strangers, the duo — Stiv Cantarelli and Roberto Villa — found themselves navigating different sonic paths, only to reconnect with a shared hunger for unfiltered, analog-driven expression.

While Roberto constructed L’Amor Mio Non Muore, a fully analog recording studio in his Italian hometown, Stiv retreated into a room with an old friend: a 1972 Roland TR-77 drum machine. There, armed with a 4-track cassette recorder and the spirits of Alan Vega and Lightnin’ Hopkins looming overhead, something raw began to take shape.

J.D. Hangover’s sound ricochets between cavernous blues, industrial noise, and the atonal rebellion of no-wave, evoking ghostly Americana under a streetlamp flicker. It's dirty, hypnotic, and undeniably alive.

Following a trail of sweat-soaked gigs across Europe and the UK alongside genre-defying artists like Boss Hog, The Scientists, Public Image Ltd. (PIL) and Alejandro Escovedo, the duo entered the studio with one mission: to bottle lightning.

With howling feedback, lo-fi textures, and a relentless pulse, J.D. Hangover doesn’t just play music — they conjure it.

This is the soundtrack of the comedown, the late-night breakdown, the last drink in a flickering dive bar.

“We wanted to recreate the atmosphere of being in one room — gear buzzing, tubes glowing, everything live,” says the band. “We set a 1950s RCA mic in the middle of it all, capturing the reverbs, the crackling chairs, the moving feet, and the amp noise. Then we fed it through feedback, fuzz organ, tape delays — when we played it back, we knew we’d nailed it.”

«Barrellhouse Queen» begins with a hypnotic drum pattern which sounds like a metronome while a distorted slide guitar calls and reverb-heavy vocals answer. It builds really nicely , before the real surprise at the end, a bar piano and reverb, with feedback on the guitar. This isn’t your typical blues-rock project. «Mr.Williamson» plays up a slightly more traditional blues vibe, complete with cool organ swells closing it out. Lyrically it’s a different story. Most of the songs on the record spin tales of drinking, slumming, and general debauchery. This self titled E.P. delivers 6 songs which ricochette between cavernous blues and the dissonance, noise and atonality of the New York no-wave scene.
