Southern Gothic Punk Blues

Grammy-nominated and genre-defying, the Legendary Shack Shakers are a Southern Gothic force of nature that has electrified stages and airwaves for over two decades. Hailing from the American South, the band blends rockabilly, punk blues, swamp rock, and twisted Americana into a wild, high-octane sound that’s as theatrical as it is dangerous. Fronted by the charismatic and frenetic Col. J.D. Wilkes — a fire-and-brimstone preacher of rock 'n' roll — the Shack Shakers are a live-wire spectacle that must be seen to be believed.

Described by guitar icon Jeff Beck as…

“a cross between The Yardbirds and The Sex Pistols”

…the Legendary Shack Shakers have earned international acclaim and a rabid cult following thanks to their hell-for-leather live shows and fearless reinvention of traditional Southern music. Their chaotic fusion of Delta blues, garage punk, bluegrass, and carnival flair turns every performance into a revival tent exorcism, complete with overdriven harmonica, upright bass slaps, and manic stage antics that channel the spirits of Iggy PopLux Interior, and Jerry Lee Lewis.

From headlining global tours to sharing stages with legends like Robert Plant, Rancid, The Black Keys, and Reverend Horton Heat, the Shack Shakers have carved out a unique place in the American roots and punk scenes. Their song “CB Song” gained widespread recognition after being featured in a GEICO commercial and earning praise from Stephen King, who listed it among his top iPod tracks in Entertainment Weekly.

Over the years, the band’s lineup has included a revolving cast of underground luminaries, with standout players like guitarist Rod Hamdallah, drummer Brett Whitacre, upright bassist Mark Robertson, and even Duane Denison of The Jesus Lizard and Hank Williams III fame. Each member adds to the explosive chemistry that defines the Shack Shakers' signature sound.

The Legendary Shack Shakers aren’t just a band — they’re a phenomenon. A Southern-fried, sweat-soaked whirlwind of sound and spectacle that refuses to be tamed.

Cockadoodledon’t

Bloodshot Records

Th' Legendary Shack Shakers hell-for-leather roadshow has earned quite a name for itself with its unique brand of Southern Gothic that is all-at-once irreverent, revisionist, dangerous, and fun. Led by their charismatic, rail-thin frontman and blues-harpist JD Wilkes, the Shack Shakers are a four-man wrecking crew from the South whose explosive interpretations of the blues, punk, rock and country have made fans, critics and legions of potential converts into true believers.

Originally released in 2003 as a CD on Bloodshot Rec., «Cockadoodledon't» features the classic second lineup with Joe Buck (Yourself) on guitar, banjo, key accordion, upright bass and drums along with Mark Robertson on upright bass and Paul Simmons on drums.

Colonel J.D. Wilkes vocals come straight out of the Lux Interior school and a hardcore, ragged combination of frayed blues, twisted bluegrass, and ornery swamp. Their frantic, heart-pounding attack on the blues standard «Bullfrog Blues» with Wilkes overdriven harmonica and ear-wincing screams is enough to scare most blues fans off. Originals such as «Help Me From My Brain» and «Blood On The Blugrass» accurately indicate their inspiration.

Covering rockabilly raver Benny Joy's «Wild Wild Lover» gives you an idea of this band's influences. In this context, their hopped-up garage blues take on Slim Harpo's «Shake Your Hips» sounds tame in comparison.

Now, for the first time, «Cockadoodledon't» is available on vinyl. This album is a full-frontal assault that doesn't let up until the whole thing collapses after just over half-hour.
